Kendal Music Centre

Kendal Music Centre is for all young musicians, whatever standard, to create and perform music as part of a group. Led by expert tutors from Westmorland & Furness Music Service and supported by funding from Cumbria Music Hub, we work with you to improve your group playing and music reading skills in a fun, friendly and supportive environment.

These groups link into the opportunities offered by Hub partners Westmorland Youth Orchestra, where you can progress into more advanced groups.

Kendal Music Minis

Tuesdays 4-4.45pm

• Explore songs, movement and instruments for children aged 4-7

• Develop music, language and co-ordination skills with our expert music leaders

Kendal Music Makers

Tuesdays 5-6pm

• A fun and accessible creative music making club for children aged 7-12

• Create music together and have fun exploring different musical activities and instruments

• You don't need to play an instrument already, but you can bring one along if you do

• Back for Autumn Term with even MORE instruments to try!

Kendal Young Strings

Tuesdays 5-6

We welcome beginner violin, viola, cello, and double bass players. We perform three concerts a year to friends and family.

Progression Routes

Progression is built in to our Music Centre Activites, and all young Musicians are encouraged to progress through the groups on their musical journeys.

From our junior groups there are opportunities to progress into the Westmorland Youth Orchestra Training Strings, Windband, and the main Westmorland Youth Orchestra.

There are also a range of other Music Hub partner activities for you to join.

Whole Class Learners

Currently learning an instrument with our First Access/WCET scheme in school? Speak to your teacher about bringing your instrument along – choose between Music Makers (or both!)

Financial Support:

We want every young person to have the opportunity to take part, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Care experience children and young people – 100% fee reduction.  
Low income families - fee reduction of 50% is available for young people in receipt of: Pupil Premium, Free School Meals, Income Support, Other Benefits & Discretionary Concessions. The discount is available for others who feel they need additional support.  For example, if you are in receipt of benefits such as Income Support, Universal Credit or Jobseeker’s Allowance or you are experiencing financial hardship due to redundancy or temporary unemployment, illness or a low income, please get in touch as we do not want finance to present a barrier to taking part.

Instrumental Lessons:

A limited number of places are available for instrumental lessons, with a lesson fee of £19 per half hour (shared for group lessons).

Most of our ensembles welcome new players throughout the year.
Registration for Ensembles is renewed each academic year.

Your child can come along for a trial session if you are interested in joining our Ensembles. Please register using our online form and tick 'Free Trial First Session'.

Can I join later in the year? Yes, we accept applications and welcome new players into our groups throughout the year.

Instrumental Lessons (Direct Tuition)

Explore and develop your musical skills on your chosen instrument with our specialist teachers. Our teachers are trained and supported to enable children of all abilities to progress their musical interests and talents.

We encourage everyone to take up lessons in school if they are available, but we understand this is not possible everywhere.

Instruments currently on offer: Guitar Keyboard Woodwind (recorder/flute/clarinet/saxophone), If you are interested in a different instrument, let us know. If you would like to request lessons, please email with your child’s name, age, school (if applicable) and preferred instrument. If we are able to meet your request we will confirm by email and booking form.
