Why do schools need a Music Development plan?

The refreshed National Plan for Music Education (NPME2), published in June 2022, strongly recommends that all schools have a Music Development Plan in place, to show their ongoing commitment to the development of music in their school.

Music is a statutory subject in the national curriculum for all children in primary school and for the first years of secondary (from key stage 1 to 3). This applies to mainstream and special schools. SMDPs should consider how your school will staff and fund this provision, including how staff development will be supported, how the school will work with its Music Hub to support and build on this provision, and how the school will monitor success.
