Cumbria Music Hub partner Rosehill are delighted to be one of ten regional partners working with Mahogany Opera Group on Snappy Operas; making opera with young people aged 7-11. School children from across West Cumbria will take part in creating and performing ten-minute works and work with composers, writers and directors to bring stories, characters and music to life.
Each region will create one Snappy Opera and during the autumn term we will be working with Jericho Primary school to create Cumbria’s. In the spring term Jericho Primary School will be joined by Lowca Community School, Gosforth Primary School, Our Lady and St Patrick’s Primary School and Ewanrigg Junior School to learn the operas created during the first year of this project and they will be performed at Rosehill towards the end of the spring term.
The pieces are being written for children’s voices with a flexible accompaniment, for piano and/or extended instrumentation, with the intention that they can be learnt and performed in a single day. Alongside the work itself, young people will have the opportunity to learn about all the different crafts of making an opera, creating costumes, props, staging and more.
The ten Snappy Operas are being developed in two cycles over three years, with mass performances in spring 2017 and 2018. Following the completion of all ten works, they will published along with learning resources. This will enable Snappy Operas to be performed by even more young people, creating an enduring resource and addition to repertoire for young people.
