Workshops

Joe Broughton: Creative Group Music

Workshop 1: is for the slightly more advanced player and will be most relevant for teaching older children and adults. Workshop 3: is not a practical workshop so you can put your feet up! Joe will talk about his approach to workshop leading and music teaching, drawing on examples from the workshops 1 and 2.

Inspirational multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and educator based in Birmingham, UK. As well as his own internationally renowned band The Urban Folk Quartet, Joe has played with everyone from Joss Stone to Fairport Convention. His compositions have been performed at The Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican Centre in London and his workshops in performance and ensemble playing are legendary amongst the teaching community. Joe has taught at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire for 22 years and lead ensemble workshops at Guildhall School of Music and Drama for 7 years. www.joebroughton.com

Workshop Summary:

Joe’s workshops will focus on how best to introduce young people to group music making in an energetic and practical way, drawing on the many different approaches to music making from around the world. This will run alongside his core ethos that energy and communication are the cornerstones of good performance and workshop leading as well as acknowledging the importance of group dynamics and how they can play out in positive and negative ways. We will also touch upon how to help students to understand music on a deeper level; its purpose and its emotive value. As well as discussing some of the tricky issues our main task will be to fill in some of the gaps that many teachers feel they have when moving away from notation or other tried and tested comfort zones of music making. What are the extra skills that are useful to have and how can we best implement them? Joe will share his experience and skill in these areas, aiming to instil teachers with the confidence to tackle them within their own settings. All these subjects will be approached in an enjoyable and practical way so please bring your instruments (and voices!) and experience a totally different kind of music lesson all of your own!
Joe Broughton is an awesome teacher, totally inspirational and with a complete understanding of his students Joe’s enthusiasm and passion for music is contagious! Fun Fun Fun!
