Breaking Down Improv Workshop

with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra

Gain practical, guided experience on improvisation with members of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) led by pianist, Simon Purcell, for a practical workshop day, lifting the lid on improvisation.

Play alongside some the UK’s most talented jazz musicians who will help you to learn new pieces from scratch, get to grip with groove, and explore harmonic possibilities – using just your ears!

Times: 10am – 3pm (with a break for lunch).  3:15 – 4pm sharing session for family & friends

Date:  Saturday 26th May 2018

Location: Studio, Carnegie Theatre, Workington

Suitability: The session is suitable for instrumentalists aged 11-18 with an approximate minimum standard of grade 4.  Places are limited, especially for rhythm section instruments so please book early to avoid disappointment.  Improvising vocalists are also welcome

Simon Purcell is one of Britain’s most accomplished contemporary jazz pianists. He has performed both as leader and sideman with amongst others – Red Rodney, Kenny Wheeler, Eddie Henderson, Stan Sulzmann, Jean Tousaint, Valerie Ponomarev, Dale Barlow, Gene Calderazzo, Julian Arguelles, Julian Siegel, Conrad Erwig, and Steve Williamson. Head of Jazz at Trinity Laban Conservatoire between 2005-2017, Simon is a committed educationalist, the author of published educational research and a highly-respected teacher.
